Can I claim part of the deposit for rent arrears?

My tenants gave notice to quit and left before the end of the tenancy, but they were unable to make the final rent payment. They have requested that I deduct this final rent payment from the Security Deposit. Can I do this - is there anything I should be aware of before agreeing to this course of action?
