Can you confirm the date I need to put for Notice Expiring and date served for a Section 21.

My tenants agreement is dated 21 August 2009, they pay on 1st of each month and I have by mistake taken that date as their agreement date and dated Section 21 on 31 July and Notice Expires after 30 September 2010, is this wrong or can it be any date after the six month's expire? What a nightmare. The tenants want to move as they can't pay their rent but local council wont rehouse them until evicted!!
