deposit protected?

Hi
a landlord has asked me to look after his property having 'sacked' his previous agent. He wants me to protect the deposit for him but he is unable to establish from the former agent if and where the depoist is protected and then how to get it back so it can be registered with me (via the DPS)

please can you advise how we find out if is protected and how we get it back to re register it if this agent continues to ignore his requests to return it?
