You can only have one primary residence at one time but you can elect which is which if you notify HMRC. There are some circumstances when the HMRC will you to do this retrospectively. All is not entirely lost you may be able to salvage the gains over a few years. But watch the figures and do seek professional advice. There are some web site that specialize in landlord tax law.
