Which is better? Landlord takes tenants to court or other way round?

I have problem tenants who are threatening to take me to court over a boiler timer issue (for which they claimed caused high gas/electricity bills). The tenants contract finishes next week, but they are still planning to take me to court. I do not mind going to court, but did not want to go through the hassle of paperwork, unless really necessary. Would it look worse on me if they are taking me to court, or would it be better if I was the proactive one to take them to court, as I have evidence against them too?
