has a deposit been 'protected'

Dear helpdesk, I have a tenant moving into my property soon and we discussed transferring his deposit with his current landlord over to me. However, he has has no idea whether or not his current landlord protected his deposit when he moved in late last year. His current landlord is not very forthcoming with information. Is there any means by which my future tenant can find out if his deposit has been protected and, if so, where it is - i.e. with the laodlord or the tds.
