End of certain term

I have let a bedroom flat on an assured shorthold tenancy for a certain term from 27th February 2011 to 27th February 2012. The period is over today but I have not given notice. I intend for the contract to roll on but only want to give 6 months more not another year. How should this be communicated to the tenant. I don't intend increasing the rent for the next period but if I did how should it be communicated.
