Continuation of tenancy after 6 months is over...

I have a 6 month short hold tenancy contract which is due to expire at the end of next month. Is it recommended that I do a new 6 month contract with the tenant or will it just continue? If I have to do a new contract - do I have to get the guarantors to sign again aswell?
