Joint or Individual AST

I have a 7 bed student property that I advertise and let out as a shared house. For the last two sets of tenants I have used a joint AST with no problems. The tenants that have just agreed to take the house from July are asking for individual contracts. Is this applicable for a shared property and does it mean that I will have to lodge the seven deposits seperately rather than as one with a nominated lead tenant.
