Periodic tenancy

We have been evaluating the pros and cons of allowing our ASTs to lapse into periodic tenancies, rather than keep generating paperwork every six months, and would be grateful if you could clarify if, once the AST becomes periodic, we can later issue a written continuation for a further six month period, and if so, is the new six month period backdated to run from the expiration of the old tenancy, or do we date it to run from the beginning of the next rent period.
