Our block of flats will be externally redecorated later this year when the 20-year old wooden windows will be re-varnished.

These single glazed windows are in a very bad state of repair and some lessees, including myself, have decided to fit new uPVC windows, paying the costs themselves.

However, the Managing Agents (appointed by the Lessees themselves) have informed us that we will have to pay an equal share of the cost of re-varnishing the remaining old wooden windows.

I have checked the Lease and the Memorandum & Artlces of Association and there is no mention of equal shared costs for communal work - I guess it is taken as a given.

I would have thought a fair way was for all lessees to pay an equal share of the cost of redecorating fascias, etc. but that the cost of re-varnishing the wooden windows should only be borne by those who are having the work done.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
