No witness on AST?

I've just downloaded the 2011 AST and notice that there is no provision for a witness's signiture. I am curious more than anything as in this case we are setting a new contract to an existing tenancy to increase the rent and the tenants are known to us.

So when was this changed since our last AST in 2009.
I have to say I have always thought witnessing signatures seemed a bit pointless. I wonder if any witnesses have ever been successfully prosecuted/sued for a tenant not being who they said they were.

But if the law said the contract needed to be witnesses was it changed?
