My tenant of 23 years left in February and the property required considerable work to update. I notified the Council that the property was empty and received a notice from them informing me the the property would be 100% exempt from council tax until August 2013. From April 1st the council changed the exemption rules to having only one month eligible for 100% exemption and after that the full tax would be applied. The property became suitable for occupation and a notified the Council that a new tenant moved in on 1st May. I have now received a rate demand for the month of April. Surely the original year 2012/13 six month exemption would have taken me until the end of March,if not until August as originally informed. The one month exemption for year 2013/14 would have would have applied to April 2013.

I have written to the council but the response is to receive another demand.
