To pay council tax or not

My son has been a PhD student in Sheffield for 4 years, receiving a grant, no income; living in a house with a working friend who has been paying the 75% council tax.
This last 3 weeks he has been given a full-time paid job (paying tax, NI etc) paid by the university. But he hasn't quite finished the PhD which he will have to finish in his own spare time over the next few months.

Should he now be paying council tax?

Also, he moves house in August to a house which the working friend is buying with help from parents.

Should my son be paying council tax for the 2 or 3 months at the present address? Or is it not worth the bother??
