Possession - Section 8 and Section 21

I have been refused re possession by the court on a technical issue of not having given notice on a date concurrent with tenancy agreement which lapsed 4 years ago The tenant is now in areas to the tune of 5 months do I have to start all over again and issue a new 21 A certificate and give tenant two months from that date ?
