Council Tax demand

I bought a property in 2010 which had been standing empty
I later recieved a council tax bill for the time it was empty before I bought it
so I just paid it
I now have sold the property in June and now have a Council tax demand for the time I had it when it was vacent between lets.
Its for £580 but I was led to believe that this debt followed the house onto the next owner as it did for
me Am I wrong ?
