incorrect date of expiry on section 21 notice

A friend has approached me today, he has served a section 21 notice expiring on the 4th October 2014, the tenant has not vacated and he wanted us to help him with the court application.
Upon checking the dates on his notice and tenancy agreement there is a problem as the tenancy started on the 10th may 2012 and he served a section 21 to expire on the 4.10.14.
Could you please confirm how a court would view this and the best way forward, would it be to serve a new section 21 notice with the correct dates.
