An existing tenant (6 months AST)has become unemployed and has applied for housing benefit to Durham County Council.

They have been told that (due to staff shortages) the application will not even be looked at for 3 months.

Is there a time limit specified in law by which the council must assess an application ?

Is there anything I can do to get them to speed up the process ?

I am concerned that they will look at the application in 3 months time, decide there is some small piece of paperwork missing and delay the proccess further..
