Proecting deposit years later

I was wondering if someone could advise on the following situation: I have had the same tenants in my property for over 6 years and they continue to live there on a periodic tenancy. When the tenancy started in March 2008 I received a deposit. This deposit has not been protected. The tenant is still in the property and I have no intention of giving them notice at the moment. Can I put the deposit into a scheme now? I would be grateful for any advice! Many thanks.
