I’ve received a payment from universal credit today. This is for a tenant who moved out more than a month ago.

I had applied for direct payment of his rent 3 months ago when he caused damage to the house and was 3 months behind in his rent. This is the first payment I’ve received from UC.

The tenant eventually moved out owing about £2000. He signed a surrender of tenancy.

It was my understanding that it’s up to the tenant to inform universal credit that he has moved.

The ex tenant has called me to ask me to give him the money I’ve received.

What do I need to do? Call universal credit? I’m assuming I can’t keep the money towards arrears. So do I pay it back to the ex tenant?
