Can I knock on the guarantors door?

I have a tenant who has overall been a good payer and communicator. The last rent payment did not go in just before Christmas and she has not replied to 2 phone calls.
Her mother is guarantor and lives in the house next door. Is there any problem with me knocking on the tenants door or the guarantor's, to politely ask if there's a problem and could the rent arrear be sorted. Obviously I do not want this to be used against me now or in the future.
I tried calling the mothers phone but I presume she has changed the number.
