When to charge Security Deposit for students not starting till September?

Hi
I am renting out to students in September. When do people usually ask them to pay their Security deposit, to be held by the DPS? Can I do it now and pay it into the DPS, when they are signing their contracts? Or do people usually leave this for just before the tenancy commences? Thanks in advance.
