tenant claiming replacement bedding

Hi, tenant noticed a nasty smell and after clearing the cupboard out, there is an AAV that has leaked. They are insisting that we pay for new bedding as it was stained. Are we liable for this? Apparently they cannot claim on their contents insurance as the excess is £450 on a claim. (actual words of tenant was "cannot claim as it will cost us £450). fine line here I guess as had the cupboard not been overloaded, they may have seen the leak earlier rather than it getting to the point of a nasty smell and noticing damage to bedding.
