What is the best way to accept a holding deposit on a flat with a move-in date months in advance?

I am currently looking for tenants for a flat with a move-in date in September. What's the best way to ensure that both parties (me and the tenants) are committed to the deal? Should I ask for the full deposit (ie a month's rent) at this stage and deal with it in the usual way (ie through the required agency)? Is it reasonable to ask for the full deposit a couple of months before move-in? Or is there another tried and tested model? Thank you.
