I became a member of the Unite trade union a few months ago.
Astonishingly they sent me an email asking me to write to my MP requesting that all tenant rent arrears during the covid pandemic are written off.
I have written a complaint email to Unite, and included comments like "Are you going to pay all the landlords mortgages while they provide free accomodation.
This email is likely to cost them a member, is anyone else here a member of Unite, and just as disgusted by this. They seem to be sucking up to rogue charities like Shelter who claim to be preventing homelessness, yet if all they ask for was given to them there would be far more homeless people in this country because who can afford to give away free housing and not be allowed to evict?

I have posted the email I got from Unite below.

What do you think of this?

I might be able to accept some things, but writing off tenant rent arrears is not one of them.

Dear Member,
I hope that you are all still keeping well?

I wanted to take this opportunity to bring to your attention some upcoming events and actions.
%C2%B7 (Evictions ) Homes for All ,Unions, Trades Councils and Campaign groups have united in this.
John McDonnell has tabled an Early Day Motion see below.
EDM states;
That this House calls on the Government to allocate time on the floor of the House for a debate on the potential merits of extending the moratorium on evictions in response to the covid-19 outbreak; and further calls on the Government to write off all rent arrears accrued during the covid-19 outbreak until the end of March 2022 or later.
Info & stats on evictions debt etc
In January 2021 over 750,000 households were in arrears and pandemic rent debts stand at %C2£375m, according to the Resolution Foundation. The government has failed in its promise to protect households during the pandemic. Shelter 28th March 2021 - 700,000 people are in rent arrears.
We are asking that all members contact their MP requesting support for this EDM. You just need to click the link below and add your name;
