HB overpayment

Hi,
I have a tenant on HB. The HB used To be paid to him, and he then paid me. During this period he was overpaid by the HB. But he did not pass on the overpayment to me. Recently the HB has started paying me directly. This is because the tenant got into arrears. But the HB are saying that I owe them the overpayment they made to him when he was receiving the benefit directly. I can't see that I am liable for this overpayment made to him. It is around £1,000. I will challenge the HB but I am interested to know from Others on their experience here.
