Mains Powered Smoke Alarms

Is there a requirement for smoke alarms to be mains powered? I have two battery operated ones but an electrician has said that they need to be mains operated and located at each entrance/exit to the flat.

I can't find any definitive answer online so any links would be much appreciated. Flat is in London.
