Guardian rag yesterday promoted Shelter's campaign to outlaw the practice of advertising property for rent which explicitly excludes people on benefits. Discrimination blah blah. "No blacks, dogs or Irish" comparison blah blah. Hounging is basic human right blah blah. Mostly predictable illinformed left wing rubbish. But....3 things alarmed me.

  1. They think the practice has already been judged as illegal because of a case in March where a woman won compensation in a related case. They are now talking as though landlords who do this are acting illegally!
  2. They claim RLA support. Oh dear. Certianly RLA have supported the move to ask banks to relax restrictions on mortgages banning benefits tenants. But does RLA really want to lend its name to this whole housing as human right approach? I am waiting to see whether the RLA distances itself from this campaign? Surely we would not support them.
  3. They are bullying one particular letting agent, trying to get people to bombard them with hostile e mails because they have the temerity to be honest enough with benefits people that they do not want their business...very nasty.

What do you think?
