Can I choose different building insurers to the ones which my freeholder has chosen?

Can I change from the building insurance company which the freeholder has chosen to use? I live in a maisonette with joins to 3 other properties. I and the lady who resides below me wish to take out our own building insurance (even with the same company), although our freeholders are stating that we are unable to change. Any advice would be great
