Renewing an AST

My tenants' AST comes to end of term in September. They have agreed to a new one year AST at the same rent. all your resource advice seems to assume the present agreement will continue as a periodic tenancy (or have I missed something?). If a new AST is agreed does the present AST need to be formally ended and can the deposit be rolled over ? I assume all the notices, EPC etc. will need to be served again.
