Better renting in Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester is doing things differently for landlords operating in the region.
Wherever you look, there are questions around new retrofit grants, devolved local enforcement powers, and legislative changes in the Renters’ Rights Act. To support better renting in the region, Greater Manchester has created the Good Landlord Charter.
The Charter is backed by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and independently run by TDS. Importantly, landlords and unions were consulted in its creation and NRLA sits on the Good Landlord Charter Board. This means it was created to improve everyone’s rental experience, with landlords in mind.
Providing good-quality homes for people can be a challenge. There are standout organisations making things easier and simpler for landlords, like the NRLA. More can be done.
That’s why The Charter is free to you. £0. No registration fees. No membership fees.
If it’s free, what do I get?
The Good Landlord Charter is funded by GMCA, so there are no additional fees for being a recognised Good Landlord in Greater Manchester. What the Charter asks for is commitment to going above and beyond to provide excellent experiences.
We’ve created Membership criteria to reshape what people picture when they think of landlords in Greater Manchester. The Charter supports landlords to meet our criteria by providing a dedicated advisor for your portfolio in the region. Our advisors are experts who can help you understand how the Renters’ Rights Act fits into our criteria and what you can do to get ready.
Are you a Good Landlord?
Landlords who register with the Charter must show they meet the minimum legal requirements to be accepted. We’ve created a step-by-step checker so you can have confidence that you’re compliant.
Landlords who are accepted into the Charter move to the next step and become Supporters. Supporters of the Charter are committed to meeting our criteria. When all the criteria have been achieved, Supporters are officially recognised as Good Landlords by awarded full Membership with the Good Landlord Charter.
How do I meet the Membership Criteria?
Your dedicated advisor will help you every step of the way to demonstrate how you provide excellent rental experiences. We’ve created a guide so you can have an overview of our criteria and what is required to be awarded Membership.
You’re not alone in improving rental standards. Joining the Charter gives you access to our team of experts. But you also have exclusive access to our network of agents, housing sector organisations, and a community of landlords in your region.
We’ll support you every step of the way. Supporters get more from Greater Manchester. As a Supporter, you:
- Get personalised advice and guidance
- Use of our brand and logo in your marketing

Recognition for our Supporters
Don’t just take our word for it. Every month, we recognise the great work of our Supporters with our Spotlight. Our most recent landlord in the Spotlight was Charlotte Puddy, a landlord operating in the region for the last 17 years. Charlotte makes the most of her registration with the Charter. She actively contributes to our landlord community events, providing peer learning and best practices, but also learning from those around her.
“I found the event to be really insightful, and it gave me the opportunity to speak to experts and tenants that I don’t normally hear from. I’ve already followed up to explore future opportunities with one of the speakers.”
Everyone has a part to play in improving Greater Manchester’s rental experience and Charlotte plays her role, supporting the landlords she interacts with and providing tenants with good homes. We look forward to Charlotte progressing through the criteria and being awarded full Membership.
