- The Energy Efficiency (Private Rented Property) (England & Wales) Regulations 2015 and subsequent legislation
- Other statutes affecting energy efficiency including Housing Acts and Climate Change Act
- Grants funding available for energy efficiency and saving improvements
- Understanding Energy Performance certificates (EPC) in detail and planned changes
- The exemptions to the energy efficiency (MEES) regulations and the need for care when using the exemptions register
- Energy efficiency and energy saving measures in detail available for residential properties including the latest new technology
Objectives
- Understand the various pieces of legislation dealing with energy efficiency
- Understand Energy Performance Certificates, information produced, how scores are calculated and ways to maximise scores and efficiency rating
- Understand exemptions available if unable to achieve current MEES requirements and the application process
- Be able to seek available grant funding to assist in carrying out improvement works
- Understand the main and most cost efficient insulation and energy saving improvement measures in residential properties
Background
From April 2018 the granting of a new tenancy for a property with an energy efficiency rating of less than Band E was banned; this was then extended to existing tenancies from April 2020. The Government over recent years have launched several consultations outlining proposals to further raise the minimum
standard (MEES) for all private rented properties in England and Wales - most recently introducing a minimum EPC "C" rating from October 2030
From a landlord perspective, the course explains in detail how to move towards achieving the revised standard in 2030 at minimum cost plus taking advantage of any grant funding and low cost finance available to fund necessary improvement to property insulation, other energy saving measures and in some cases installing new heating technology, especially of a more sustainable nature. Finally the course will also cover the ever increasing options to generate and store electricity in the home via solar panels and other generating options and the use of smart tariffs to minimise costs of purchased electricity from the National Grid
This training course qualifies for 3 continuous professional development (CPD) points which can help towards or maintain your accreditation with the NRLA. If you are interested in becoming an accredited landlord with the NRLA, CPD points are necessary to achieve that status.
NRLA Accreditation recognises landlords who have agreed to maintain professional standards in the management and maintenance of their rented property and deal fairly and professionally with their tenants. Accredited members demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of their responsibilities and obligations and strive to maintain, increase and improve their knowledge of the market through training and development.
