Energy Efficiency: Write to your MP or MS
The NRLA is urging members to write to their local MP or MS to explain the potential impact of the Government’s energy efficiency proposals on their businesses
Earlier this year, the Government announced it was consulting on proposals to change the minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES), in England and Wales with new tenancies expected to have an EPC rating of C by 2028 and existing tenancies by 2030.
While recognising the importance of improving energy efficiency in the private rented sector (PRS), the NRLA has huge concerns about this proposed timescale for change.
As it stands, the Government is planning to introduce the regulations in late 2026, leaving landlords with less than 18 months to assess, secure funding, complete upgrades and obtain a new EPC.
We believe this timeframe is far too tight, with 2.5 million rental properties across the country currently falling below a C.
There are also major cost implications, with landlords expected to pay up to £15,000 per property to bring them up to standard.
How do I contact my MP or MS ?
There are number of ways this can be done. Whether you write them a letter, email, contact them via social media or meet them in person, its vital you add your voice to the campaign to help bring about positive change. You can find details of your local member contacts here.
What do I say?
The NRLA is encouraging members to call for a more phased approach to the timeframe for change as well as:
- Clear in information on the new standards
- Detailed guidance on required upgrade measures
- Financial support
- Increased availability of qualified tradespeople
What more can I do?
Writing to your MP or MS as a constituent is a powerful way to ensure your voice is heard. If the proposed changes are likely to influence your future portfolio decisions and the future of your tenants, these will be factors your MP or MS will be interested to hear about and will provide them with the evidence they need to take the issue further.
