Get your rental ready for winter with Airtasker

Elise Hodge 19 October 2026

October is when the clocks go back, the leaves come down and tenants start switching the heating on for the first time. It's also when small maintenance issues turn into big, expensive ones. A little prep now means fewer emergency call-outs, happier tenants and a property that stays in great shape through the colder months.

Here are four checks worth ticking off this month, and how Airtasker local taskers can help you get each one done:

1. Give the heating a once-over

Heating issues frequently arise as temperatures drop, often due to cold radiators or low boiler pressure. Prevent emergency call-outs by ensuring the heating system is checked before winter: bleed the radiators, top up boiler pressure, and confirm that the thermostat and timer function correctly.

Get it done: Post a task for a local tasker to bleed radiators and run through the basics. For anything involving the boiler itself, look for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

2. Check the roof and exterior

Autumn storms can easily reveal weak spots on your property. Take a look outside for missing or damaged roof tiles, cracks in the walls, or gaps where rain could leak in. Spotting these issues early helps prevent costly water damage inside.

Get it done: Post a task for a roofer or exterior repair specialist to inspect and fix anything that's come loose.

3. Clear gutters, downpipes and drains

Blocked gutters overflow, soak walls and lead to damp and leaks. The best time to arrange a clean is once most of the leaves have fallen, usually late October into November. Hire a professional to handle gutters above ground-floor height safely.

Get it done: Post a gutter cleaning task and have someone with the right equipment clear gutters, downpipes and drains safely.

4. Stay ahead of damp and mould

It pays to protect your rental investment from damp and mould. Ensure extractor fans work properly, check that sealant around baths and showers is intact, and inspect for early signs of condensation.

Get it done: A Tasker can replace tired sealant, repair or install extractor fans and treat small patches of mould before they spread.

Tick it all off in one go

If you manage more than one property, or just don't have the time, you can post a task for each job and compare quotes from local Taskers. Check their reviews and ratings, agree on a price that works for you, and let them take care of the rest.
