Mental Health Awareness week - taking care of yourself and your tenants

Letting out homes can be a stressful business, and with the impact of Covid-19 and added pressures of the current cost-of-living crisis it is no surprise many people are struggling with their mental health.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and, with this in mind, the NRLA is reminding landlords to think about their mental wellbeing – and to reach out if they need help.

NRLA data shows shows 40% of landlords believe the pandemic had a ‘negative or very negative’ impact on their mental health, with many tenants also struggling.

Long periods of isolation have left many feeling vulnerable with illness, job losses and arrears all having an impact – particularly on those who live alone.

The focus of the 2022 campaign, organised by The Mental Health Foundation, is loneliness.

According to the organisers one in four adults feel lonely some or all of the time, with the campaign aiming to raise awareness of the impact of loneliness on mental health and the practical steps that can be taken to address it.

The NRLA has created a webpage, signposting landlords to services that can support them and their tenants, with specialist staff who can offer help and advice.

These include mental health charities and free debt advice organisations.

NRLA chief executive Ben Beadle said: “The long-term impact of Covid and the recent hikes in utilities, food and fuel bills mean these are difficult times for landlords and tenants alike, with many of us feeling the pressure.

“At the NRLA we are keen to help landlords with all aspects of their business – and maintaining their mental health and supporting tenants who may also need help is an important part of that.

“We would encourage any landlords who need help to access the webpage and get in touch with the specialist services that can help them.”
