Register My Appliance Week 2024: This is why you should register your appliances

Untitled Section

Landlords are being reminded of the importance of registering the appliances in their rental properties online.

The annual Register My Appliance campaign takes place 22 – 27 January and is organised by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA).

The initiative aims to highlight the many benefits for homeowners of registering appliances, namely to receive information about product recalls and product safety updates.

According to AMDEA, though rare, manufacturers may identify problems with an appliance once the product has been in use for some time.

However, customers often do not provide contact details when they buy a product, with the association warning it can then become difficult for manufacturers to trace and contact them about safety issues down the line.

According to the association, not only will registering an appliance make it easier for manufacturers to get in touch about vital safety updates, but doing so may also entitle you to an extended warranty or guarantee period. It is also quick to do, online.

Appliance safety for landlords

A portable appliance is defined as an item that can be moved and usually unplugged from a power supply.

While it is not a legal requirement for all landlords to carry out a PAT test on appliances in their rentals, (unless part of a licensing condition) it is best practice for landlords to do this.

This is because where a landlord provides an electrical appliance as part of a tenancy, the law expects the appliance will be maintained in a safe condition that will not cause harm to the tenant.

For most appliances, a visual inspection by the landlord for any signs of danger would be sufficient.

However, if an appliance is particularly dangerous to check or a landlord does not feel comfortable assessing it, the NRLA advises that a qualified person should perform the inspection.

Need a professional to PAT test the appliances in your rental?

If you’re looking for a qualified person to PAT test an appliance for you and produce a certificate, the NRLA’s compliance arm, Safe2 can help.

Safe2 can help you arrange the inspection, and produce a safety certificate. With a 5% discount for NRLA members on all property safety certificates arranged, click here to get started.
