Registered with Rent Smart Wales after this date? Complete training or you could lose your licence

Landlords who registered with the licensing body Rent Smart Wales after July 2020 are reminded that they must take an approved Renting Homes Wales training course, or they risk losing their licence.

The Renting Homes Wales Act, which came into force on 1st December 2022, introduced widespread changes to the way property is let in Wales.

This includes changes to tenancy agreements – these are now called Occupation Contracts – and changes to the rules around fitness for human habitation legislation and gaining possession.

Landlords who registered with Rent Smart Wales AFTER July 2020 were required to undertake Renting Homes Wales Act training, to meet the conditions of their licence, before 28th February 2023.

However, it is estimated that some 4000 landlords have still not completed required training. The NRLA is urging those whom this applies to, to complete the training as soon as they are able to.

At present, no retrospective penalties for completing the course late will apply.

If landlord fail to complete the course they could lose their Rent Smart Wales licence, meaning they could no longer legally operate in the PRS in Wales.

NRLA approved training

The NRLA is an approved provider of the Renting Homes Wales Act course, and the course has been recognised by the licensing body as being sufficient to meet your licensing conditions.

The course covers landlord and contracts, fitness for human habitation legislation, possession, abandonment and more.
