Course of the Month - Property Standards - eLearning

Sanjeev Shetty 15 July 2026

With new on-the-spot fines of £7,000 for category one hazards – rising to a maximum of £40,000 – it is essential you remain on top of all your responsibilities when it comes to health and safety in your rental homes..

That’s where our revised Property Standards course comes in.

Fully updated to reflect last month’s updates to the Housing, Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) it will help you get to grips with how the revised legislation will be applied in practice as well as running through all your obligations when it comes to tenant safety.

The course at a glance

The eLearning course, developed to allow you to learn online at a time and place to suit you will empower you to:

  • Get to grips with the reformed HHSRS, including the new High, Medium and Low hazard bands, and the risk-based approach taken by local authorities.
  • Understand the new civil penalty scheme, including the £7,000 fines councils can issue for a category one hazard.
  • Identify when tenants can seek compensation for injury, harm or loss under the Defective Premises Act 1972.
  • Recognise when a property could be deemed 'prejudicial to health' under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

It will also run through:

  • Your basic repairing obligations under Section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985.
  • Gas, electrical and fire safety requirements.
  • What you should expect in terms of tenant behaviour, nd how this affects your obligations.
  • How to get access for repairs, even when a tenant is reluctant.

The course costs just £40.50 for members and £49.50 for non-members, and will give you  two standard CPD points.
