TradePoint - how to spruce up your front door

Giving the front door of your rental property a fresh lick of paint can do wonders to improve its kerb-appeal if you’re about to re-let. In this blog we cover how to do this, step by step.

First, you need to start by preparing the door to be painted. Make sure you pick a clear, dry day to paint the door.

Keep the door ajar, and before you get started make sure you protect the floors of the hallway or porch area, an old sheet or old newspaper could be useful.

Next, remove as much ‘door furniture’ as you can. This includes the letterbox and the door handle itself. Unable to remove something? Take some frog tape and cover it up instead.

You should then fill any cracks in the door with paintable filler, to ensure a smooth finish, and lightly sand the door and wipe using a damp cloth. Leave the door to dry, then you’re ready to get painting!

If the base looks inconsistent or there is exposed wood on the door, it is ideal to use a primer prior to painting the door.

A weatherproof wood paint would work just as well.

You need to start by painting the inside of the panel mouldings first, using a cutting brush to ensure a neat finish. Once these areas are painted, you can then take a roller or paint brush and continue to paint the centre of the door, finishing with the perimeters.

Leave the door to dry, and remove any frog tape used when it is completely dry. You could also buy a brand-new letterbox and handle to compliment the new paint job.

And there you have it! A door that looks as good as new, in just a few steps!
