Q&A: Get to know NRLA adviser Sam

We are delighted to launch a new blog series where you can get to know some of our advisers in our expert advice team a little better.

Our advice team is on hand six days a week to help members with a whole host of queries, from tenancy legislation updates to practical advice on property management. In this blog, we meet experienced adviser Sam (pictured, right).

Sam has been giving landlords expert advice for the past four years. Here she explains the one piece of advice she'd give to all would be landlords, what she enjoys about her role, and the best piece of advice that she has received.

NRLA members can access free expert advice six days a week, via our landlord advice line. Sound good? Join us today from £85.

Hi Sam! Hope you're doing well. Tell us a bit about you. How long have you worked for NRLA (or NLA/RLA), and what is your professional background?

I began working as an adviser for the RLA back in 2017 before we merged into the NRLA last year so I’ve been working for the company just over four years. My previous job was an allocations officer and avoid coordinator for a large social housing company. Before that, I worked as a travel agent for ten years.

Great! As one of our expert advisers, what do you enjoy most about your role?

I really enjoy working for the NRLA, I get great satisfaction out of assisting members with their queries, educating them on their rights and helping them resolve their problems and issues.

What advice would you pass on to a would-be landlord?

Join the NRLA!! Make sure you do some homework so you know what is required of you. Landlords have responsibilities and legal obligations that need to be followed in order to comply with the law, which means they can't be avoided.

What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve received? (this could be professionally or even in general)

You can’t control other people’s actions, but you can control your reaction to them.

What do you like to do in your spare time outside of working for the NRLA?

I have a young son, and I enjoy spending my time with my son watching him develop, grow and change every day. I especially enjoy days out as a family and making memories together.

Our expert advice team is made up of a group of trained professionals who work for us on a full or part time basis to provide information, advice and guidance to our members. Members can give the team a call six days a week (excluding bank holidays) on a whole range of different issues, from deposits and tenancy agreements to rent arrears and welfare.
