I have bought a fully tenanted HMO at auction. As the new landlord, must I carry out new right to rent checks on the existing tenants prior to taking possession of the property? This may be difficult to achieve as tenants may be on holiday, or unavailable. The current landlord ensures me they have been done, but how can I be sure and would that be sufficient in anycase? Please advise my best course of action. The HMO licence application also asks if I have performed right to rent checks on my tenants. At present the answer is no, would this risk the licence not being granted?
