Mental Health Awareness Week - thinking about your mental wellbeing

Letting homes can be stressful at the best of times, with the added impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and associated issues of arrears, job losses and emergency court restrictions leaving some landlords close to breaking point.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and, with this in mind, the NRLA is reminding landlords to think about their mental wellbeing – and to reach out if they need help.

Recent NRLA research shows 40% of landlords believe the Covid-19 pandemic has had a ‘negative or very negative’ impact on their mental health.

Overall one in four people will experience a mental health problem in any given year – figures which are likely to rise as a result of the pandemic.

The NRLA has now created a webpage signposting landlords to services that can support them, with specialist staff who can offer help and advice.

These include mental health charities and free debt advice organisations.

NRLA chief executive Ben Beadle said: “The NRLA is here to help landlords with all aspects of their lettings business.

“These are  immensely difficult times for a lot of landlords and it is important to recognise when you’re feeling anxious, helpless or low and reach out get the support you need.

“This could be making an appointment with your doctor or another healthcare professional – or speaking to trained counsellors who can help you if you are struggling with your mental health. There are also charities which can help with debt advice.

“While our circumstances are all different we are going through this together and you are not alone.”
