Kerb appeal: How to professionally repaint the front door
Before starting to prepare the door, make sure you have the correct tools and type of paint for the job. More information on this can be read further on in this blog.
Step one - Prepare the door
Just the same as painting an interior door or a wall, before diving in and starting to paint the door its vital the door is prepared in the correct way to ensure a smooth, professional finish. Remove as much of the door furniture as you can - things like doorknobs and house numbers, or ensure these are covered in a masking tape border to protect them from the paint.
Step two - Get cleaning
You can use a diluted general purpose household cleaner to clean the door. Give the door a rinse with water once it has been cleaned. If there is any algae or similar on the door, treat this using a fungicidal wash.
Step three - Get sanding
Before you begin sanding, you’ll want to take a flat scraper tool and use this to remove any flaky paint. Once this is done, you can start sanding down the current paint on the door.
Top tip: There are different types and grades of sandpaper, so research which type you will need. For example, low grit grades are perfect for sanding surfaces that are quite rough and coarse. The type of sandpaper you will need depends on the condition of the door.
Step four - Get painting!
Now the door has been prepared, it’s time for the fun bit! More information on the correct type of paint to use is included in the video at the bottom of this article. A good place to start is to paint the panels and then paint around the broad work. Continue doing this until the door is fully painted. Leave the door to dry fully, and then you can remove any masking tape and replace the door furniture you removed at the start.
