Forum spotlight: Do I choose tiles or panels for my bathroom?

Our members-only forum is the ideal place to share experiences with other landlords and seek advice.

In our forum spotlight this month, we look at a recent question a landlord posted on our forum in relation to the decor at their rental property.

They explained that they are replacing the bathroom and that they are currently in the process of getting some quotes.

They were keen to get other landlords' views about whether it is best to have panels or tiles in the bathroom, as a tradesperson they had spoken to had recommended panels.

Landlords' responses

This question proved to be a popular topic, with several landlords chipping in to offer their opinions and advice.

The first person to post on the thread said they tend to use panels in the bathrooms at their rental property, because - in their experience - water doesn’t get behind the grout or discolour as much and provides a better overall finish.

The next landlord to post partially agreed. They said that in their experience while the finish on panels looks good, in their view it is not as hard wearing as ceramic or porcelain tiles.

They also warned the shine on plastic panels is unlikely to last for long and said that a bathroom they had tiled 20 years ago in one of their rentals was still going strong.

The next person to post also recommended the landlord opt to use panels in the bathroom, saying that in their view panels that are fitted correctly are far less troublesome than tiles, and also look cleaner overall.
