Tradepoint: How to: Paint your tiles

Are you thinking of giving your bathroom or kitchen space an update, but on a tight budget?

Rather than re-tiling the whole space you could paint your tiles to instantly give a room a new lease of life, with this easy-to-follow guide from B&Q.

Tile paint is extremely versatile and can be used on porcelain ceramic and glass tiles. It's also simple to apply as it requires no primer and provides a tough durable waterproof and mould resistant finish.

What you will need:

  • Tile paint

  • Tile cleaner (containing bleach)

  • Lint-free cloth

  • Natural bristle brush

  • Grout cleaner

When painting tiles it is vital that they are clean and dust-free. Begin by first cleaning any surrounding grout joints with a grout cleaner and wipe the tiles down using a lint-free cloth.

Next, check the grout joints for any damage and make sure to repair before painting.

Top tip: visit the B&Q youtube channel to watch videos on how to clean grout or how to regrout your tiles for more guidance on this step.

For a thorough clean use a cleaner containing bleach to remove all dust dirt and grease and wipe down with a cloth.

Now it’s time to start painting your tiles.

Top tip: Make sure to stir the paint well before and during use.

Begin by applying one coat evenly using a natural bristle brush making sure to thoroughly work the paint into the grout joints for an even coverage. Make sure you finish the brushstrokes in a vertical direction for a clean finish.

Finally, allow the paint to dry and inspect the finish. If you're painting over a strong colour or a pattern a second coat may be required making sure to check the container for drying times.
