Forum spotlight: Privacy notices and data protection

Our members’ only forum is great place for landlords to share experiences and ask questions.

A landlord recently took to our forum to ask a question relating to data protection.

They had noticed that the NRLA Tenancy Checklist states that landlords are required to supply tenants with a privacy notice at the start of a tenancy, which details the landlords’ data protection policies.

The landlord wanted to know if there was a template form they could use to give to their new tenants.

The responses

The first landlord to comment on this thread began by recommending the landlord look at the NRLA resources hub, as members can download a template data protection privacy statement directly from the site.

This contributor also pointed out that some optional legal protection covers, bought with landlord insurance, also have privacy agreements.

An adviser from our advice team then joined the thread. They pin-pointed the exact webpages the landlord needs to visit in order to download the template privacy statement. They mentioned that on the same webpage, landlords can also download a template data audit document.

Our adviser also reminded this landlord of the importance of being registered with the Information Commissioner’s Officer (ICO).

Failure to do so when this is needed, could result in a penalty.
