TradePoint: How to keep your garden watered while you are away

Holiday season is here, and those of you with green fingers may well be worried keeping plants and grass watered at your rentals, especially if you, or your tenants will be away for a number of weeks.

This blog covers some top tips from NRLA partner TradePoint (B&Q).

How to keep gardens watered while you, or your tenants, are away

  1. Automate your sprinkler: Some sprinklers also operate with programmable timers, for example attached to the outdoor tap, so if you’re worried about grass becoming too dry while you’re away it might be a good idea to purchase one to ensure it is adequately watered.
  2. Upcycle an old bottle to keep outdoor plants watered: If you usually leave your plants un-watered while you are on holiday, try this handy trick. Take an old bottle such as an old wine bottle with the screw cap top on it. Very carefully take a small drill and drill some holes into the cap. Next, remove the screw cap top and fill the bottle full of water. Screw the cap back on and tip the bottle upside down into plant pots. The water will trickle very slowly from the glass bottle, helping to keep your plants hydrated when you’re not there to water them.
  3. Automate the process by setting up a drip system. Alternatively, you could set up a drip system to keep plants watered, with an electronic timer, and a rain sensor to collect water.
