TradePoint: How to insulate a stud wall

Stud walls can be an excellent way of breaking up a large space, and as the weather gets cooler, properly plastering and insulating the wall will help to keep the overall space warm and cosy.

In this blog, NRLA partners B&Q (TradePoint) explain how to do this. For a step-by-step guide on building a stud wall, you can watch this video.

How to add plasterboard and insulation to a stud wall

Once you’ve got the skeleton of the wall in place, the first thing you’ll need to do is  install plasterboard to one side of the stud wall.

  • Using a drill, screw the plasterboard into the stud wall. You may need to cut the final piece of plasterboard to size so it fits snugly.
  • With one side of the wall done, its time to add the all important insulation into the middle of the wall.
  • Carefully measure each section of the stud wall – it’ll look like a grid – to work out how much insulation material you need to fill each section.
  • Wearing gloves, and using a pen knife, carefully cut the insulation roll to the sizes you will need.
  • Add each pieces of insulation in to each section, taking your time.
  • Once all the insulation is neatly in place, you then need to add plasterboard to the other side of the stud wall. Again, use a drill to screw the plasterboard into the studs, ensuring the plasterboard is a snug fit.
  • Both sides of the wall should now have plasterboard on them, so the final step is to cover the edge of the wall in plasterboard, too.
  • First measure the edge, and then you can cut the plasterboard to size, and install it over the vertical studs on the end.
  • For safety reasons before you start plastering, you’ll want to make sure there are no pointy corners, so you’ll next need to fit some corner beads on the corner edges of the wall.
  • Taking care not to bend the corner bead, use some nails to hammer this in place.
  • As a final step, you should then cover all the plasterboard joints with scrim tape, and this will help to prevent any cracks appearing on the joints when you come to plaster the wall.
