Deadline approaching for Rent Smart Wales licencees to complete essential Renting Homes Wales training

Private landlords in Wales who obtained a Rent Smart Wales licence between July 2020 and 30th November 2022, are reminded they must complete an approved Rent Smart Wales (RSW) training course in the next few weeks.

The course must be completed by 28th February 2023 as a condition attached to the current licence.

The Renting Homes (Wales) Act came into force on 1st December 2022 and introduced significant changes to the way private properties are let out.

What happens if I obtained a new Rent Smart Wales licence after 1st December 2022?

For landlords who obtained a Rent Smart Wales licence after 1st December 2022  (either a new licence or a licence renewal where the first licence was issued before the 1 July 2020), there is a condition on the next licence that Renting Homes (Wales) Act training must be completed within three months of obtaining the licence.

However, if licensing training is completed after the 1 December 2022,  this condition will have already been met, as all training on offer by RSW and its approved providers will be updated to reflect Renting Homes content.

There may be a transitional period where people complete licensing training before the 1 December 2022 to apply for a licence after the1 December 2022. In this case, the Renting Homes CPD module will have to be passed within three months of the licence being issued (if not already completed). More can be read on this here

Of course, any landlord, regardless of when their Rent Smart Wales licence was issued, can complete the NRLA’s Renting Homes (Wales) Act training, to ensure they are clear on all the changes this piece of legislation has brought in.
