I am interested to hear how other landlords treat applications from people who have moved to this country.  I have had good immigrant tenants over the years and bad ones.  I am going to assume that on this forum we are intelligent enough not to think all immigrants are only ever one thing.

I have a house on Openrent at the moment in inner city Manchester.  2 bed terrace in really good state.  The majority of enquiries are from immigrants which is making me think carefully.

Here is my current policy specific to immigrants;

1.  Must have been in UK for at least 5 years.  This is because their credit file will be meaningless if they have not had time for bad credit to show up.

2.  All tenants must speak English good enough for me to understand them.  I have turned down many couples where the man speaks passable English and the woman hardly any.

3.  I really want to see longer term immigration status such as Leave to Remain or Settle European.  I am sceptical about student visas for instance.  My general business model is that I am only interested in tenant who I think will stay at least 5 years.

4.  All tenants must be in the UK and come to the viewing.  So for instance I am not interested in "I want this house to bring my wife from country X".

Everything else is the same for native born tenants.

What do people think.  Please don't turn this into a political debate about immigration.  What I am interested in is how does a landlord respond to non UK born applications...
